About Therm-a-Rest In 1971, Seattle aerospace giant Boeing announced the largest layoff in company history, resulting in 50,000 people losing their jobs. Among the jobless were Jim Lea and Neil Anderson, both engineers who were eager to get back to work. Turning to friend John Burroughs--an avid mountain climber--for ideas, Burroughs suggested a better sleeping mattress, specifically one that was lightweight, warm, and comfortable. Taking their inspiration from gardening cushions that expelled air as the gardener shifted his or her weight, the duo took a piece of open-cell foam and sandwiched it between two pieces of airtight fabric. Using an old sandwich maker, they melted the fabric onto the foam, creating a bond that was perfectly airtight. After adding a valve, their prototype was ready to test. Within two years, Lea and Anderson had partnered with Burroughs to begin production of Therm-a-Rest pads, the world's first self-inflating mattress. Under the name Cascade Designs, the private, family-owned company has grown into one of the most respected outdoor manufacturers in the world. Still based in Seattle, Cascade Designs sticks to the same fundamental principles it was founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds your expectations.

| Customer Reviews: Returned them... July 27, 2010 Brett Whited (Parkersburg, WV United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought 2 of these and ended up returning them for a better Alps sleeping pad. They seemed like they wouldn't last a few nights. Very thin and rubbery material. I wasn't really pleased with them... but that's just me.
Punctures Easily July 21, 2010 Jeffrey Friedlander I used this pad for only a few camping trips. It didn't take long for it to puncture, not due to abuse just normal wear and tear. I tried to cover the holes with duct tape, but it would be flat in an hour or so. The result was a pad that wasn't much better than sleeping directly on the ground.
Good value for the money September 24, 2009 Mary Schultz (Palo Alto, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This thermarest mat was lightweight and inexpensive, as advertised. It was definitely not as cushy or thick as my friend's more expensive model thermarest, but much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground or a foam mat, which would be the only other two options on my backpacking trip due to trying to keep my pack weight down. If you have the money, go for a more expensive thermarest as they are extremely comfortable, if you are going budget or don't backpack very often, this mat does the job at a fraction of the price of the top of line thermarests.
Durable, light, reliable and comfortable May 17, 2009 Charles M. Tronolone (Allentown, PA United States) 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I spontaneously bought this self-inflating mattress in the Fall of 2006 for a 7,000 mile bicycle tour. Every night for five straight months I went stealth camping on non-designated camping terrain with this pad and it held up beautifully. I've used it on top of rocks, branches, thorn bushes, holly leaves and snow, and I haven't a single complaint. It is very comfortable and inflates in about 5 minutes, then I blow two or three breathes into it before closing the valve. It has never popped or failed in any way.
After that 5-month, 7000-mile trip, I went on another bicycle tour lasting two months and about 2000 miles. Again, I used this same Thermarest everyday to stealth camp on less than ideal surfaces and it held up perfectly. This thing folds up real nicely and takes up about half the space available in a single pannier.
I don't normally leave reviews for products that I personally own, but the only other review of this sleeping pad is speculative and it does the product substantial injustice. This is a reliable piece of gear well worth your money.
Oh, and after all this bicycle touring, I've been using the same Thermarest as my bed because I'm too nomadic/cheap to buy a real mattress. I've been using it as an indoor bed for about a year. And guess what -- it's as comfortable as ever.
I don't think it's relatively cheap price is worth the flimsy mattress you get October 14, 2008 N. Jackel 3 out of 16 found this review helpful
This mattress has a very very thin skin, so it will puncture very easily and probably won't last as long as other therm-a-rest mattresses. It's more like plastic sheeting than the cloth some mattresses use. On the other hand its very light, only 430g. it is thick enough that you won't feel the floor threw it.
I don't think it's relatively cheap price is worth the flimsy mattress you get.
