Among the best September 4, 2010 ThatMikeGuy So i was skeptic of this 3 pack of dry sacks for $12. So i researched it, and found a lot of reviews saying theyre great. but reviews mean squat. people from the company can (and often times do) post five star reviews for their products claiming how magnificent they are. So i spotted a few youtube videos, and the results of the water tests truly amazed me. So much so that i bought 2 packs (got them from walmart. Walmart had free shipping at $11 about a week ago. they dont have free shipping anymore, so buy it here) and i did a few tests. I tried each bag full of water (remember, roll the top flap AT LEAST 3 times for waterproof results, and be sure to bring the hard flap down over the soft black flap) and they did not leak at all. like AT ALL. if you applied a good deal of pressure (more than a single hand could muster) it started dripping from the top. But realistically, you wont fill them with water. youll fill them with dry gear. And no matter what i did, dunk it, submerge it for minutes, run water over it, shak it under water, it kept the inside dry (i used toilet paper to test it, as you can easily spot water on it). Point being, for backpacking and light water activites, these are perfect at an unbeatable price. if you are concerned about electronics (humidity still can build up) place them in a sandwich bag inside the drysack. I have yet to try them in the field, but i expect dry results. just another note on use, DO NOT hang them from the buckle. If you hang them from the buckle, the difficult path formed by the rolled flaps that makes water impossible to get in will be compromised, leaving small spaces where water (like rain) can slide in. if you need to hang them (like a bear bag) buy a cheap laundry bag, place them in it, then hang the laundry bag. itll let water out so theres no standing water, and keep it out of reach of any animals. Happy hiking!
Not Waterproof. At all. "Ultimate sack" _this_. August 31, 2010 apophasis (turtle island; thoracic spine) Shouldn't the term "waterproof" have some sort of standard associated with it? These bags are not waterproof. Now, in my opinion, if they leak _at all_ they could not be called waterproof, (perhaps water _resistant_) but these leak more than a little. After a mere half hour of intermittent test spraying in the sink, (not the 12 hours of constant shower I experienced on my last hike...) the towel inside the green bag was quite wet in several places, and yes, I rolled the closure four times; that wasn't the problem.
Since keeping things dry in the backcountry is a survival issue, I believe that Outdoor Products is actually committing a crime (moral, if not statutory) in advertising these bags as being "waterproof" when they are not. I'd love to see them sued into nonexistence over this, actually, but I will merely refrain from ever buying any "Outdoor Products" products again, and I'd recommend you do the same. Unfortunately, it's too late to return these, but I plan to get a couple Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sacks, which are supposed to actually work as advertised.
Ziplock gallon freezer bags a better choice August 22, 2010 Rebecca Morn (Placitas, NM, USA) Okay, so maybe they won't fit everything, but when I'm hiking, I use gallon- or quart-sized ziplock bags for nearly everything that'll fit inside one. Cell phone, GPS unit, wallet -- all in a bag which, once sealed, can float on water if it came to it. Same for foodstuffs -- I separate into gallon or quart sized portions and bag each separately. Smaller bags are also great for keeping things organized, since in many cases they can be put inside larger bags. They're cheap (especially if bought in Costo-sized bulk), reusable, and durable. Best of all, if sealed and undamaged, they are utterly water proof.
And I gotta tell ya, even though it sounds dumb: There is no greater joy than being out on a rain-soaked week-long wilderness hike and discovering a pair of clean, dry socks, sealed in a ziplock at the bottom of your pack.
I have yet to use a so-called "dry sack" obtained anywhere that is actually water PROOF, as opposed to "as mildly water resistant as an untreated nylon tent." Once soaked, these 'dry bags' are a pain to dry out enough to stow again.
Cheaper at Wal-Mart July 5, 2010 Jackson Goss (Orlando FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good bags for organization. They are water-resistant, not water-proof. Meaning it can resist water for short periods of time. Same product available at Wal-Mart for around $10-12.
No issues whatsoever July 5, 2010 Jordan Prillaman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been using these bags to keep dirty and wet items separate from my cleans when I travel. The bags definitely seem thin, yet sturdy. I left wet clothing in them for a week to see how it would hold up, and they performed exceptionally well. While a smell lingered, I simply put warm water in the bag, closed it and shook it up, then turned it inside out and dried it with a paper towel and it was back to new. Definitely a sound purchase for anyone looking for an easily cleaned storage solution.
