Amazon.com Product Description Ideal for hiking, travel, and emergency preparedness, the Aquamira Frontier emergency water filter system is the perfect addition to your 72-hour emergency kit. The Frontier filter's proprietary blend of microscopic carbon, binder and antimicrobial particles is tested and certified to remove more than 99.9 percent of cryptosporidium and Giardia while also helping improve water taste and eliminate odors. At the same time, the filter is also easy to operate: just attach and expand the straw, submerge the filter end into the water source, and drink through the straw. It's just like drinking soda from a cup or bottle, or you can even drink directly from a water source, such as a stream or lake. And at less than 1 ounce, the Frontier slips easily into a daypack, shirt pocket, or travel bag, so it's always ready when you need it. A single Frontier unit filters up to 20 gallons (75 liters) of water. Aquamira's Filtration Technology Aquamira's blend of filtration particles is heated beyond the melting point of the binder material until the particles adhere to each other in a process called "sintering." The result is a highly porous, carbon-impregnated filter block with a tightly controlled pore structure. Aquamira Filtration Technology incorporates both mechanical and absorptive filtration processes to remove both physical and chemical contaminants. Although the Frontier filter does reduce bacterial and viruses, it is not certified to remove the more than 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.99 percent of viruses required by the U.S. EPA water purifier standard. For maximum protection, use the Frontier in conjunction with water treatment drops or water purifier tablets. About Aquamira Aquamira water treatment drops were introduced to the outdoor market in 1999, and have been a favorite of top outdoor guides and instructors ever since. The original idea was simple--people should be able to drink water anywhere, and the water should be safe to drink, taste good, and be easy to treat. This idea inspired the company's research team to develop the technology for a variety of portable drinking water systems and a line of water treatment products that effectively treat water in all kinds of environments, including when camping, traveling in a foreign country, or faced with a disaster. More recently, Aquamira has expanded its vision to include providing basic life-preserving items for both individuals and groups, such as villages in developing countries. Aquamira is headquartered in Logan, Utah.

you don't have this yet? :) June 26, 2010 solocanoe (fort smith, ar) ok, here's the deal. put this in your wish list...next time you need some $$ to get up to the free shipping...add one. then keep doing that until everyone in your family has one of these for their emergency pack.
Tablets are great and light, but still a pain to use. boiling is best, but sometimes you just can't. this is less than an ounce! It's not perfect, but it's so small and light...it will be WITH YOU when you need it. better safe than sorry. It will taste bad initially (carbon) but just spit out the first few draws and you'll be fine.
Pretty good, but be prepared for initial carbon April 7, 2010 Gil (California) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This system is much like everyone mentions. It's light, weighing about as much as 5 quarters. It's compact, about the size of a roll of pennies. The filtration unit seems pretty sturdy and would probably not crack if dropped. The straw seems OK, about the same quality as the flexi-straws you get with $10 plastic water bottles. I'd worry that the straw might crack with repeated use, but it should be fine if you use it only for emergency purposes (i.e. rarely).
As with all carbon-based filters, this one has a lot of dust when you first use it. I forgot this detail and was surprised by the straw full of coffee-colored water on my first draw. There is a note on the unit that warns about this dust (which I didn't notice until later). The note implies that all of the dust would disappear after the first draw. That is not true. I've drawn about 4 cups of water through the system, yet there is still very noticeable dust in the water. It's no longer the color of coffee, more like weak tea. I'm OK with this, but my wife and daughter would complain (of course, they probably wouldn't complain too long if there's no other water).
In sum, I think this is a good product and recommend it for emergency use. But I suggest drawing a few cups of water to remove the carbon before you store it in your emergency kit.
Great little filter March 29, 2010 goin outside (Bay Area, CA. USA.) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
For the price, portability and weight of this filter, Aquamira has hit a home run
for all who enjoy the outdoors. Have used it in many sources of water, delta to high sierras, no problems whatsoever. great for ultralight camping, treking, safety, emergency preparedness and even all around just fun toy for the kids, this filter seems to be a fantastic way to assure a form of clean rehydration when and if necassary.(please be a wise guardian with your children when I mention it as a toy for them, they need to be guided in life and safety and that's your job.)
Amazingly small and light March 22, 2010 Wulfstan (San Jose, CA United States) Weighs not much more than a bottle of water purification tablets, and without the nasty taste. A must have for your daypack, cargo pockets or survival kit.
A bit of carbon dust will be there, but it is harmless.
Yes, on a real backwoods hike, you need better. But this is so small and light, it is more of a survival kit item, as opposed to your everyday water filter.
Basic Survival H2O Portable Filter System! February 26, 2010 David Michael (Hawaii) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The BEST Emergency Waters Filter Systems is ... "Always The ONE that You have with You"! I purchased three, one for different applications and it's money well spent, for those situations that have been totally unplanned, whether on a mission, trail guide, camping, spelunking the outback or military. It's very Light, Simple to use, 2-piece filter system that will do in a emergency situation.
I wrap mine in a zipper lock bag, tied with a heavy duty rubber bands ... all items that I can use, in the moment.
